WHAT WE DO:
Leading Effective Classroom Discussions  with Shaun Longstreet, Ph.D.
We frequently hear about the benefits of student centered, active learning, but experienced faculty know that creating such a space takes thought and effort.

One of the most effective ways to develop an active learning environment is via classroom (and online) discussion.  This workshop provides a forum for participants to develop and share strategies for creating a classroom environment that is conducive to engaged discussions. Participants will reflect on when classroom discussions are appropriate and some of the typical challenges we face when incorporating discussion into our curriculum.  Over the course of the workshop, we will highlight three elements that can contribute to successful class discussions: socialization, preparation, and effective questioning techniques.
